Georgia Geneva "Jenny" (Martin) White

September 19, 1928 ~ February 4, 2020 (age 91)


Georgia Geneva "Jenny" Martin White, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died peacefully on Feb. 4, 2020.  Jenny's life showed devotion to God, family, friends, and community.  The eldest of 7 siblings, she was born on September 19, 1928 in DeKalb, Texas, to Stanley Martin and Bernice Baker Martin.  After graduating from DeKalb High School in 1945, she was a teacher at Hubbard Chapel School in DeKalb for several years, then graduated from Texas Women's University in Denton in 1949, her Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition.  She later did graduate work at TWU and at East Texas State University.

She was dietitian at White Oak Public School, before marrying Thomas Richard ("Dick") White on June 4, 1950, in the First Methodist Church, DeKalb.  Dick and Jenny made Pittsburg, Texas their home for 64 years where Dick was editor of the Pittsburg Gazette.  Jenny was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, a president of the PTA, a president of the North Texas Dietary Association, a president of the Women's Society of Christian Service at the Methodist church, and was also Secretary of Student Work for the church's Texarkana District.  A member of the American Dietetic Association, she was also a Registered Dietitian for Pittsburg Medical and Surgical Hospital for 15 years, and was Dietitian Consultant for 10 other area hospitals and nursing homes.  One of her proudest achievements was as 5-year Chairman of the Pittsburg/Camp County Public Library Board, which built the present Pittsburg Public Library.  She was also a board member of the North East Texas Library Board (Dallas area), was a teacher for 2 years in the Pittsburg Public Schools, teaching science and history, and was business manager for the Pittsburg Gazette for 5 years.  She was a president of the Pittsburg/Camp County Arts Council, Woman of the Year for Camp County Chamber of Commerce in 1974, and the following year was also Woman of the Year of the Business and Professional Women's Club.

Jenny was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Floyd, sister Carol Downs, and brother Joe Martin.

She is survived by her sister Ann Gentry, sister Judy Johnston and husband Steve, and brother Jim Martin and wife, Karen, and many loved nieces and nephews.  Jenny is also survived by her daughter, Toni Evetts, son, Tom White, son-in-law David Smith, as well as grandchildren Kate and Cole Evetts, Leslie and Austin Evetts, and great-grandchildren Reese and Sadie Evetts--all of Austin.

Services for Mrs. White will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9.  A family graveside service will be at 1 p.m, Rose Hill Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m at First United Methodist Church, Pittsburg.

Visitation will be at Erman Smith Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 8, 5:00-7:00 p.m.  The family has suggested that memorial gifts be directed to the Pittsburg/Camp County Public Library.
