Obituary

Lewis D. Merritt, 85, of Pittsburg, passed away on September 16, 2023, at his residence. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Erman Smith Funeral Home.  A memorial service will be held at the Elks Lodge in Arlington, TX at a later date.

Mr. Merritt was born August 27, 1938, in Tyler, to James T. and Opal Tate Merritt.  He retired from Six Flags over Texas after 20 years in the mechanical department.  A veteran United States Navy, a member of the Christian faith, and he was a lifetime member and past officer of the Arlington Elks Lodge.

Mr. Merritt is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gayla Merritt; son, Scott Merritt of Pittsburg; daughters, Pamela Merritt of Raleigh North Carolina, and Lisa Merritt Shahan and husband, Michael of Arlington; grandchildren, Larissa Shahan Jones, and Shamika White Walston; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Trey, Elin, Bentley, Adrian, and Davina; brother, James F. Merritt and wife, Joy of Loveland, Colorado; sister, Shirley Willaby of Forney; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James T. Merritt, and Opal Byrum; sister, Joye Merritt Powers; grandson, Jonathan Shahan; and first wife, Patricia Hodges Merritt.

No formal visitation is scheduled.
